Leucorrhoea is a whitish, yellowish or greenish discharge through the vagina which may be normal or may be a sign of infection.
Normal or physiological leucorrhoea-
Normal vaginal discharge occurs due to variations in hormones in your monthly cycle. The discharge becomes thinner and stretchy around the middle of your cycle when ovary releases an egg. This discharge can get stickier when your periods are about to occur.
Leucorrhoea may occur during pregnancy and is considered normal when it is thin, white and relatively odourless. Increased hormones and body fluids are responsible for this kind of discharge during pregnancy.
Adolescent girls may experience leucorrhoea within several months to a year of the onset of menses.
Leucorrhoea is sometimes observed in new born girls usually lasting for one to two months, the reason being exposure to mother’s naturally increased hormones during pregnancy.
Abnormal leucorrhoea –
Leucorrhoea is considered abnormal and can be a sign of infection or inflammation when the discharge is yellow or green, has an offensive odour and is associated with itching, pain or soreness of vaginal area.
Possible causes of such kind of leucorrhoea are:
- Yeast infection of vagina
- Bacterial infection of vagina
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Pelvic inflammatory diseases
- Infection of vagina due to protozoan
- Inflammation or infection at cervix
- Vaginal atrophy (changes in vagina after menopause)
- Vaginal cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Forgotten tampon
Abnormal vaginal discharge can cause extreme discomfort and irritation, especially if it comes back repeatedly after treatment, which many a times does. The recurrence occurs because during treatment chiefly the underlying infection is addressed. Along with it the health and hygiene of the local tissue needs to be improved so as to prevent further infections. This factor if not addressed properly, tends to keep the platform open again for infections.
At Dyumna Women’s clinic we lay emphasis on this factor and hence our treatment plan comprises of internal medicines as well as specialised local treatments to enhance and rejuvenate the health of tissues of the reproductive system.
Personalised formulations: Herbomineral formulations are prescribed to cover the infections as well as improve immunity of the reproductive system.
Specialised procedures: Local treatments like Yoni Dhawan and Yoni Pichu show excellent results not only in giving relief in the current symptoms such as itching, foul smell and vaginal discharge; but consistent schedule for a specific period helps to prevent the recurrence as well.
This treatment protocol is advised in leucorrhoea caused due to infections and inflammation of vagina and cervix and also in menopausal symptoms.
Other options such as surgery can be opted for in case of vaginal or cervical cancer.
Investigations like some blood tests, ultrasonography, PAP smear or biopsy are advised as per the need to make a diagnosis and assess the recovery from time to time.
Yes, leucorrhoea can be a challenge for many, but rest assured; it is a challenge with strong solutions. Please do not ignore your symptoms due to less or no priority, shame or any other reason.
